Birds are often used in poetry and song lyrics to represent humans and sometimes more specifically the human soul. Most often, the birds are used as a metaphor for women. I took inspiration for this series from the lyrics of four songs with birds as their central theme: The Cuckoo (Traditional), Blackbirds (Erin McKeown), Worms (Beth Orton), and Canary (Liz Phair). The lyrics of these songs, in particular, represent the way our culture perceives and sometimes treats both women and birds. Many of the prints highlight the absurdity of these analogies while others depict the sometimes violent approach to the subject.
